Volunteering in Africa
We receive numerous calls and let
ters from school and university leavers looking for ‘gap’ work at one of our projects in Africa. Sadly these opportunities are very rarely possible, but now we have linked up with volunteer project specialists Africa Asia Venture and Worldwide Experience, who can offer some of the most rewarding, and adventurous opportunities, ranging from wildlife conservation and marine preservation work to community outreach assignments and teaching.
Africa and Asia Venture
Any person, with a social conscience and an adventurous spirit, should consider spending 3-5 months with Africa and Asia Venture (AV). AV is a UK-based, not-for-profit social enterprise that, since 1993, has specialised in volunteering projects in the developing world for those aged 18 to 25. Over 5,500 young people from 30+ countries have together contributed more than 1,200 man-years of service in the communities in which AV works.
Volunteers are based in groups but live, immersed, in the community, typically in pairs or fours: they live with the locals as the locals live. The work they do centres mainly on primary and secondary schools in poor rural areas throughout Africa, Asia and Latin America. They help in the classroom, coach sports, get involved in extra curricular activities or work in the wider community. After three months of community work, volunteers enjoy four weeks of independent travel where, within reason, they can travel wherever they like (as long as they are not alone) and with AV’s on the ground teams advising on where to go, what to see, where to stay etc. Throughout their time in country, AV offers volunteers just the right balance of independence and management support from its 24/7, local, on the ground team.
AV is proud to be associated with Tusk, whose ideals it shares wholeheartedly.
AV will make a donation for any volunteer taking a placement with them introduced by Tusk. We therefore ask anyone contacting AV for information to advise them that they hear about AV through Tusk.
Worldwide Experience
Worldwide Experience initially specialized in Africa, with its roots at the Shamwari Game Reserve in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, but has since developed to include projects all over the globe. Working with local groups and authorities, these include monkey rehabilitation projects in Kenya, leopard research in Sri Lanka, and community work at orphanages, crèches and schools in South Africa. Working alongside local experts, volunteers will become deeply involved in their designated tasks, regardless of how long they take part for. Work placements start from four weeks, and are tailored both to the volunteers’ requirements and to the needs of the recipient communities. The volunteer schemes are open to all age groups, fitness levels and abilities, with specific skills and personal aspirations taken into careful consideration to ensure the most effective and rewarding venture for all concerned.
